Our latest volunteer, Melissa, arrived yesterday morning. Her train was delayed so I had an hour chilling out at the station with an excellent Ice Coffee before she arrived shortly after 9.30am.

Melissa is currently on a break from working in Australia and hails from France.

She has previously had experience working with children in Africa and I’m sure she will be a big plus to the Foundation during her stay.

With the children at school right now Melissa’s first day was spent looking around the children’s home and learning a little about what we do.

At lunch time we popped down to the primary school where Melissa got to say hello to our younger children.

When the children got home from school she was very soon joining them, doing more of the papier mache art they started on the weekend and enjoying a game of badminton after dinner.

Melissa then spent time helping the younger girls with English homework before heading over to the Volunteer house for a well earned rest.

Today Melissa is spending time at the school taking a look at how things run in a local Thai school before taking time out for sight seeing in Chiang Mai in the afternoon.

Despite recent health concerns life goes on happily here in Stratton House. This weekend all the children pitched in yet again in our constant battle to keep the rapidly growing weeds at bay in the garden.

Whilst all the other children set to with hands and shears, Tai went at it with our newly acquired strimmer. Good job done by all, but no doubt it’ll all need doing again next weekend with all the rain lately:)

Leisure time was taken up by the usual cycling, badminton, and this weekend Jig-saws and figurine painting came into action.

Yesterday we welcomed our latest volunteers, Erma and Ayanna from Michigan, USA. A great Mother and Daughter team, they have fitted in most well, very quickly.

After arriving early yesterday morning they spent the day getting to know the kids and more about what our aims are here at Stratton ABC.

Ayanna comes with lots of enthusiasm and a great mentor who appears to have a very similar philosophy on life as myself.

The children are getting more used to volunteers coming and it wasn’t too long before the ice was broken and Erma and Ayanna were joining in with games such as Table Tennis and Badminton.

Here a little after 8 this morning they are now playing bingo with the children who are home; 3 children, Gu, Tai and May2 started back to school today.

Erma has kindly agreed to work mostly with Jack today giving him some much needed 1-1 time.

It is also nice to report that Ayanna is already talking about the possibility of working with friends back at home to help raise funds for the Foundation in the future.

Recently our team here at Stratton House was boosted by the arrival of Somboons Father, Boonma, who has been a great help during his stay.

Up early every morning he has been hard at work tidying up all the rough edges that remained around the grounds.

He has also started to utilise the remaining soil patches for vegetable growing.

pumpkinAround the borders of our site you can see many small wickered ‘fences’ like these which mark where he has planted pumpkin and marrows.

On top of all this he has been spending the remainder of his daytime hours constructing collection boxes. When he has finished this first batch we will have 30 collection boxes which we hope to place in and around the local community.

collection-boxes2The aim is that eventually the revenue from these boxes may cover the basic running costs of the home.

This will mean that more of your donations can be put towards further improvements to our facilities and services and towards our long term aim to actually purchase the property to ensure a permanent facility.

Behind the house the foundations of a previous building will be used for sporting activities such as badminton and basketball.

basketball-badmimtonWe hope to purchase a net this weekend and Boonma is possibly going to make us a basketball hoop very soon.
