Here we are, its Xmas again. I have had some fairly strong views on Xmas over the years, not keen on its over commercial nature these days.

That said, my work with the children of Stratton House has melted my objections a little.

They have all done so well this year, with their studies, our projects, behavior, everything, they make me so proud.

Although this is a mainly Buddhist household, we will be celebrating Christmas Day as the purported Birthday of a special man and using the opportunity not only to give all the kids that special day of fun but to teach them the spirit of giving too.

Thanks to many donations recently, added to gifts already purchased, our Xmas Tree is surrounded by many gift wrapped presents. Some of these were numbered, and last night each child picked out a random number from a box and took the gift with the corresponding number. Today they took those gifts to school, to give to another child who they feel may get less than others on Xmas Day.

Thanks to all those who have helped to ensure our kids will be having a great Xmas this year.

Oh..and Mum! All the kids say please, please, please look after yourself and make sure you are fit and well to come and see them again.

This week it was Nus Birthday and the day turned out to be quite special.

First bonus was that Brendan kindly took us all out to lunch at our favourite Kow Soi restaurant on the Sarapee/ Samoeng Rd.

After a wonderful lunch of Kow Soi and Spring Rolls we then went off for a surprise visit to the Night Safari. We had told the children that we were going to try and find more participants for the re-cycle project.

This trip was made possible by our Ukulele playing friend, Craig Moore, who recently donated his fish after suffering in the recent floods.

Both entrance and refreshments as well as Birthday Cake later in the day were all sponsored by Craig. Thanks very much..the kids had a great time:)

We first took the trams around the two “safari routes” on which the children had great fun feeding deer and other animals.

We also took the walking route around the lake before heading home for Birthday Cake and present giving.

So far Nu has had a new T-shirt and a doll set and has a little left from her Birthday budget which she wants to use for new trousers.

Hope you had a great day Nu, we all love you very much and you deserved that day.

In the middle of the week  it was Birthday time again. This time it was our grade A student, Tai who was celebrating.
First present came through the post from my Mother, an Oasis CD. From the Foundation he received a new watch, (Sorry Mum the one you gave for Xmas bit the dust) and a Guitar lesson book with VCDs.
As it happened it was also a day off  school for the Mattayom students and Tai spent some of his day starting his self portrait Mural.

Committed student that he is he also still found time for more study at home.

After a light dinner in the early evening, it was Cake and Kanom time again. This time round we chose Icecream cake. Having not long come out of the freezer Tai had quite a job cutting it, but got there in the end.

Tai, I hope your 14th year sees continued success in your school studies and more self discovery of the many talents you possess.

We had a special day today at Panyaden Summer Fair, details of which will appear on this website tomorrow.

But an already special day has just been made even more special for me.

From a very special boy, came one of the most precious of Birthday gifts.

Having presented one figurine that he had just finished painting and asking if he could take it home when he goes for Song Kran Holiday, he then presented a second that he had completed earlier in the day.

” Jack aow hai Daddy, sam rap wan gert”.

My birthday is later this month but Jack knows I will be on my holiday then.

Thankyou Jack, very much, you can be sure I shall treasure this.

Monday saw the first Birthday party for one of the children from Nan. It is strange how Thai people don’t appear to take so much note of their birthday or, indeed, birth year. There was a little confusion at first with May claiming to be 12 years old. Checking her birth certificate I confirmed that she actually became 11 on Monday. Sorry May, another year before you get to stay up later.

May got a little extra pocket money for the day at school and we gave her her card on her return from school.

It had ended up that I was on my own to do the present buying at the market in Banthi in the morning. May had requested clothes and I was not at all sure what to buy an 11 year old Thai girl. After a light dinner I presented her with the two shirts I had bought and breathed a sigh of relief when I saw how happy she was with them.

She rushed off to put her favourite on, before we had the small party at around 7pm. Birthday cake, mango and sticky rice and lots more kanom and pop.

Lots of smiles and happiness that make this work worth it.
