wheely-bin

To maximise the participation and efficiency of our re-cycle project we would like to place wheely bins at sites convenient for both donation and collection. In order to keep set up costs of this Project to a minimum and maximise funds available for The Foundations work we would like to ask for sponsors to fund the purchase of these bins.

Yesterday we were visited by our latest volunteers, Zoe and Rhianna from the UK.

Unfortunately the recent heavy rains meant that their original planned trip to work at a rural school was cancelled due to flooding.

Good luck for us as they are great girls and keen to help with the children here at Stratton House.

They have also got behind our Re-Cycle idea , arriving today with a small contribution from their personal travel use.

Thanks girls.

Big thanks to Steve Lisely of San Kampaeng for getting our re-cycle project underway with our first donation of re-cyclable plastics.

Steve and his partner Pah, were kind enough to deliver, saving us transport costs. It was a quick visit and I didn’t manage to get a photo of the helpful couple; next time I hope.

We hope to have flyers, out and about in Chiang Mai advertising this project, very soon.

Our first collection run will be on Friday, midday-ish in the Hang Dong area, so if you live in the area and spot this article and want to donate your re-cyclables please get in touch as soon as possible.

Sometime ago now we posted our Re-cycle Project idea, asking for anyone with rubbish they want rid of to “donate” it to us.

Sadly we got no response to this idea , but now, thanks to our project getting a small feature in Citylife Magazine we have had some good responses and are looking forward to getting the project underway this week.

As a small Foundation operating in economically difficult times raising funds is not easy. This project gives you a way of supporting our work without hurting your pocket.

Its simple….give us your trash and we will cash it in to boost Foundation funds and continue our work.

This weekend the children at Stratton House all pitched in to start getting prepared for the Project start. Previously, when re-cycling our own waste we had one “bin” where glass, plastic , metal and paper were stored in seperate bags. On Saturday the children helped choose and clear a new spot where we used concrete pipe sections to make four seperate bins, which were then painted and marked in both Thai and English language. On Sunday the children had fun adding more decorative painting to the bins to identify what should go in which.

We are expecting our first donation of recyclables this Wednesday. Also on Tuesday I have a meeting in town with Faye Mitchell, Editor of Living Journals, who has offered to organise recycling bins at her apartment block, and on Friday we hope to make our first collection from the American Pacific International School.

For our children, helping their future by encouraging recycling will also be helping their present needs.

If you are interested in being included on one of our re-cycle runs please contact us using the contact form below.

The inspiration of Art continues here at Stratton House and is not restricted to the children alone as I have been drawn to add to the kitchen Murals myself.

The best part of doing this is that it has then inspired the children to do even more , coming up with their own designs on the wall opposite.

If you like Art, keep watching as there is much more wall space still left to fill and 10 children who are loving developing their artistic skills.

If you’d like a closer look, why not pay us a visit….donations appreciated :)

Yesterday (26th), afternoon we got a little more painting done in the kitchen. Whilst Tai worked on his mural outside the other 3 Mattayom children and our Volunteer , Rebecca, helped me in the kitchen.
Included in the job has been gloss paint on areas of the wall that get water and food preparation back splash in order to make for easy cleaning.
In order to complete the job we desperately need more floor paint.
If you are able to sponsor its purchase please look for the easy link on the right hand side of the page.
Or alternatively, if you live in Chiang Mai you may feel able to donate paint direct.

Its been a running thing here for the last couple of weeks that I have kept asking the children to change the water in the fish pond and they kept reminding me that our fish nets needed replacing otherwise they could remove the fish first.

With the children home for 4 days over the Kaow Pan Saa period I finally got my memory in gear and purchased the necessary nets.

So on Friday morning the children set to emptying, cleaning and refilling the fish pond. The water had got pretty murky and it was a nice surprise to see just how many new fish we now have.

And as we do our best to waste as little as possible here the old water was tipped onto the vegetable plots.

Wow, that was quick. True to their word the sellers have got on with clearing the land ear-marked for our self build project.

I paid a visit to the site this morning and now have new photos giving a much better view of the site.

A lot of hard work is ahead of us, not least in raising the funds to begin the build.

Once the purchase is complete we will look at plans of how best to put the land to use in the interim. Possibly using it for more extensive vegetable growing for both use at Stratton House and as a source of funds for the Foundation.

Despite recent health concerns life goes on happily here in Stratton House. This weekend all the children pitched in yet again in our constant battle to keep the rapidly growing weeds at bay in the garden.

Whilst all the other children set to with hands and shears, Tai went at it with our newly acquired strimmer. Good job done by all, but no doubt it’ll all need doing again next weekend with all the rain lately:)

Leisure time was taken up by the usual cycling, badminton, and this weekend Jig-saws and figurine painting came into action.

In September we are due to receive the help of enthusiastic volunteer Becky Huang from Singapore.

Becky is on a short trip to Chiang Mai right now and took the chance to pop in and say hello earlier this week.

We had a good chat and Becky met all the children and took a good look around at what goes on here.

Becky seemed very enthusiastic and, with her experience as a social worker with children in Singapore, will be a valuable addition to our workforce in September.  We look forward to seeing her again then.
