Its a popular time of year for Volunteers it seems as we have now been joined by Anna and Tom who will be helping out for 2 weeks.

Once again they have fitted in quickly with the children and having arrived on Friday evening have already had one busy day helping with the days trip out on Saturday for Childrens Day.

They have come armed with some great activity ideas and buckets of enthusiasm. We look forward to lots of fun during the next fortnight.

Childrens Day threatened to be a wash out with heavy rain first thing.

Thankfully this eneded at around 10.30am and , with Anna and Tom , we boarded the truck and headed first to the local celebrations at Chompoo.

It has to be said that we appeared to have missed the main fun and games but there was still a few things going on in the well organised village affair.

Gu managed to win himself a big money box and all the kids tucked in to the free food on offer.

From there we headed into Airport Plaza where everyone enjoyed watching a magic show. We actually decided that it was a tad noisey and also difficult for supervision of the whole group here and after the magic show we moved on to Central Plaza , Huay Kaeow where the children enjoyed the rest of the afternoon at the show and Playground set up in the centre of the Mall.

A lot of running around and as Anna and Tom can confirm , a tiring day for the adults, but the important thing was that the kids had a great time :)

Last week we managed to clear all the rubble from our local building supplies shop. We were grateful for the start but to get even a walking track will require much more.

Thankfully we have already sourced a second donation from a Thai family who are just finishing some new building at their home near Chompoo.

We went for the first load yesterday afternoon. The Mattayom children finished early as usual on a Monday and came along with me to help out.

I have been again today and will likely be going everyday this week to collect the huge amount of rubble at this site.

Hard work, but its ok, I could do with the work out :)

We do still need much more after this , so please we are still waiting to here of any more possible sources.

Last week I mentioned the unfortunate news of one of our dogs , Dam Dam having been poisoned. Thankfully this week the news is much brighter. After 3 days intensive care at Chompoo Veterinary Surgeons, run by Dr Tang, Dam Dam returned home.

She still needed watching closely and had to be kept apart from the other dogs for a couple of days but she is now very much better and mixing well with them all once again.

A check up on Friday confirmed good recovery , although still slight signs of nerve damage still to heal completely.

A very lucky girl and a very happy bunch of kids now she is close to full health once again.

What with the damp weather and school term well underway, with much homework and study to be done, things have been reletively quiet here.

One small highlight was Soms birthday on the 17th. As with all previous birthdays, it was a small party with cake and kanom here at Stratton House and some new clothes from us, with some rubber stamp animals coming a couple of days later from my Mother. Som is now 9 years old.

In between the study all the children have continued to do their bit out in the garden, clearing weeds, planting new crops and strimming. The playground also got a good weeding.

After the works slots there is time to relax with biscuits and a cold drink.

And there has also still been plenty of time for general playtime, riding their bikes, the ever popular art work and practising their musical instruments.

Tai has made big strides with the guitar and only yesterday spent a long time playing along to music on his headphones. Don’t know what he was playing to but his guitar sounded sweet.

There have also been a couple of new projects with the children practising hard, singing the Shelby Lynne song, ” A Wall In Your Heart”.  Somboon has done a lovely photo show to the song, with the lyrics superimposed to help the kids with their practice.

All the children also had great fun with Somboons second project in which they took part in making a video, which Somboon matched to a Tai pop song. This involved dressing-up and acting out scenes that they all enjoyed very much.

The kids loved it so much, we are now planning ideas for producing costumed performances of the “Jataka Tales”,(Buddhist proverbs).

As you may know our child protection policies now prevent us posting recognisable images of the children but as they will all be in costume we hope to be posting the first of these performances very soon.

Its been a traumatic week for everyone here after one of our dogs, Dam Dam, got out and returned suffering the effects of poisoning. We rushed her to the vets where she spent a prolonged period in seizure and it was very touch and go as to whether she would survive. Dr Tang at the Chompoo Vets surgery worked very hard to save her and after 3 days intensive care Dam Dam has returned home. She is still suffering the effects of her misfortune and we now wait and hope that her nervous system will repair itself properly.

We would like to extend thanks to our local Tessabahn,( Chompoo), who responded very quickly and efficiently to a request to help with the mosquito problem here, with a large build up in their numbers recently.
This morning a whole team turned up and the grounds and house were sprayed. We were also supplied with salts for standing water for the killing of any mosquito eggs remaining.
The Tessabahn official spoke reasonable English and as well as the help with the mosquitos, free of charge, mentioned that they could help with jabs for the dogs if needed. As it happens we have already dealt with that but it was nice of them to offer.
Thank you very much to the team.

The official Childrens Day is the second Saturday in January.

This year we had decided to stick to one of the smaller celebrations. We had been told that there would be activities at the Police Station in Chompoo.

So after the normal Saturday morning chores were finished we headed off at around 10.30am, taking the pleasant drive down the waterway to our Tumbol village.

Sure enough the activities were already underway with lots of games and giveaways to the children.

Mum kindly donated 100 baht to be given as a prize with one of the games, won by a local boy.

Our children got involved too, especially Nu who jumped at every chance to join in the fun.

Another well organised event by the local constabulary, who included a road sign identification game in the activities making for an educational morning as well as lots of fun.

There was not so much to do for the older of our children and after some thought and a couple of hours at Chompoo we decided to take everyone over to the Cold Season Festival at City Hall.

And what a good descision that was. One of the first things we did was get everyone a ticket for fishing out prize tickets from the waterway at the Red Cross stand. Most of us got washing liquid or shampoo, but Gu ended up winning us a twin tub washing machine.

After that great start we wandered around the festival where the children spent money that my Mother kindly gave and I paid for one big ride for everyone. The younger children all, opted for going on ‘bumper boats’ whilst Gu and Tai joined me on the Bumper cars.

Another great Day rounded off at home with another giveaway of cuddly toys from my Mum and relaxing infront of the TV with a Disney cartoon.

Hope you all had a great day kids…love you all.

Ok, now I’m getting a little fed up with all this rain we’re having at the moment.

Unfortunately it meant no Bai Tio this weekend.

We had a bit of a break on Saturday morning with no rain so everyone pitched in to try and get on top of the rapidly growing jungle in the garden.

But Sunday was very nearly an all dayer so it was indoors all day.

Still we had a good English seesion learning, this, that, those and these, which was lots of fun.

I’m bracing myself for getting behind on website and some admin this week as I have allotted this week for major out and about work looking for sponsors and more sites for our collection boxes. another reason for hoping the rains stops.

Sorry for the further delay with the ‘Where to go and Find ‘ Directory , but should be live very soon.

Sunday the 13th saw me slightly under the weather. Luckily I had been free of the virus that the children suffered but I think that the stre of the usual work pretty much exhausted me.

The children we also only recently recovered and so we decided on a quiet afternoon in the leafy village of Chompoo, just a few kilos from the childrens home.

The village of Chompoo is known locally for being home to many very large catfish which many people feed each day.

At the centre of the village there are always a few small stalls on the bridge over the stream that the fish live in.

One of these stalls sells undecorated plaster of paris money boxes. With them you get a few small plastic bags of paints of various colours and use of some brushes. Many families go and relax whilst their children sit and paint the models.

And this is exactly what we did. The children chose their own and sat for sometime working on bringing the money boxes to life with colour. Myself and Boon joined in too. Its wonderful how the simplest things can be so relaxing.

First of all apologies once more for a lack of action on the website. Things have been busy here and still not internet at home, I simply havent been able to find the time to catch up.

Last week saw 5 of our 7 children go down with a 5 day virus. poor Jack even ended up in hospital for 3 days with a fever of 40 degrees.

I’m happy to report that everyone made a full recovery.

Last weekend I was not so well myself and Sundays day out was a quiet afternoon in Chompoo village which I shall add a report on later this week.

This weekend the children had asked to go to the waterfall at Doi Suthep but we explained that with the recent heavy rains this might not be very safe.

So in the end we decided on a trip back to San Kampaeng Hot Springs.

A good time was had by all.

You may notice from the photos that Mae, Yong and Jack weren’t present.

Mae and sister Yong have finished the school year and have gone home to Mae Wang until the 18th of April.

Poor Jack, after his illness suffered the loss of his Grandmother and went home for 3 days.

The rest of the kids enjoyed the time swimming in the Hot Springs pool and playing in the play area later before heading home.

eveningrelaxWe have done our best to make Stratton House feel as much like a modern family home as possible and, with out a doubt, one of the most popular household items is the T.V.

However, we have no wish to see a ‘couch potato’ culture develop and do our utmost to control the childrens allowed viewing times.

homework2000During school days no TV is allowed in the morning. On returning home, the strict rule is that the TV does not ge turned on until all homework is finished.

If some children are slower than others then for the ones who have finished there are chores to help out with or  physical leisure activities to partake in whilst waiting.

Jack is very keen to help out with the expanding vegetable growing and runs round with the watering can most evenings whilst waiting for Yong and Mae to finish their homework.

jackenglishIf homework is done, and behaviour good, an hour or twos cartoons or childrens movies are allowed.

On the weekend we aim to occupy the children with sports or art and craft as well as extra curricula English lessons, again limiting the T.V use to an acceptable level.

All the children are given plenty of positive attention, and assistance where nesseccary, whilst doing their homework and and are proud to show their finished work.
