‎"telling someone what they have to learn is a long and tortuous road, often ineffective; giving someone the opportunity to explore what their brain finds particularly interesting at the time opens the gateway to optimization of that individuals potential" anon

Firstly I would like to say how happy I’ve been with recent rapid responses to our appeals for items to fulfil the small dreams of some of our children.

These gestures have been a real boost to the children for their efforts and real proof that there are people who care.

Now we need to make a far more urgent appeal.

If you have heard of our work, visited our website or maybe even visited our Children’s Home project and are at all impressed with what we are doing, we desperately need funds coming in to ensure that we can carry on into the future and fulfil the promise of “A Better Chance”, to the children here at Stratton House now and many more in the future.

With big efforts here to bring in better efficiency in all areas of our operations, our basic running costs have now been reduced to 30,000 baht a month.

Clearly, to improve, develop and increase our services to help more children we will need more, but our main priority now is to ensure that the first target of basic monthly running costs is covered.

Ways you can help

If you have paypal please consider using our Donate button right now.

Take a look in our online shop; here you will find gift items produced here at Stratton House; sponsor a child options; and in our Wishlist section options for sponsoring specific needs, such as a weeks food or a weeks drinking water.

If you live in Chiang Mai keep a look out for our collection boxes, now in several locations around the city.

You can find Handmade cards produced by the children in Nok ‘Em Ded store in Prapaklao Rd, close to Wat Chedi Luang.

Recycle Initiative

Also now we would like to start a recycle iniative where your rubbish can help us. If you would like to recycle more but struggle to find a way to get rid of your unwanted plastic/glass/card or paper please get in touch.

We already recycle most of our waste and if you give us details of where you are then we will collect; all monies from the recycle centers will go directly into The Stratton ABC Foundation general Household budget. (please note that this option is open only to those living within Chiang Mai City area or between the City and Sarapee areas…..if you are not sure get in touch anyway and we will let you know if we can offer the service).

If you have any spare time and have any ideas for fund raising please get in touch.

Please help The Stratton ABC Foundation continue to build on its good start and go on to help many more disadvantaged Thai children have, not only A Better Chance, but quality of life as well.

Its been quite a busy week for me this week , applying for my work permit, going out with collection boxes and continuing work on promoting the Foundation; all inbetween doing my bit with taking care of the children.

Tai and Gu were both home 3 days this week, their school being closed due to testing.

That worked out quite well because they helped out on the two days I went out scouting for locations for our collection boxes.we would like to give big thanks to Tic Travel, Ratchadamnoen Rd and to Makro Chiang Mai(super highway), for accepting our boxes.

Local shops that have also accepted are our local pharmacy in Sarapee and the nearby Thai cafe located next to the railway line.

As usual the childrens spare time has been taken up by riding their bikes, games in the garden, doing homework and watching a little TV.

Right now the Lamyai buyers are in the village and on a couple of days Wasana has had the children helping to harvest our Lamyai. Not much to be made for us but it all helps with the childrens pocket money for school.

We have had a couple of very good English language sessions this week with the children learning Months and Days. Using his more advanced comprehension I got Tai to take a turn at being the teacher. This was partly to give him more confidence in actually speaking and also to show him that teaching is not easy for the teacher.

I have to say he did very well and now says he understands the difficulties teachers have when children don’t listen.

Now that we are an officially registered charity it means that we can try to get our collection boxes in the bigger retail outlets, around and about Chiang Mai and the Northern Thai Provinces.
In preperation for this I spent yesterday producing stickers, and this afternoon, (Saturday), five of the children helped out with putting the new stickers on the boxes.

We got quite an efficient production line going and had the job done in little over an hour.
Tai operated the paper guillotine, carefully cropping the stickers from the many pages I had produced.

There were the main photos for the tops of the boxes;

smaller photos showing different aspects of life at the childrens home, for the front;

long labels with the name of the Foundation, complete with registered charity number, and smallers copies of the Foundation logo sticker to spot around;

and not forgetting number labels so we can keep proper track of the individual boxes.
Som stood by ready to take the cut labels over to the tables where Nu, May2 and Gu carefully stuck the labels onto the boxes.
Now we have 20 more boxes ready to go out over the next couple of weeks.

So please keep your eyes out for our collection boxes and think about dropping some of your small change in there  when you can.

pretamboonLife is going on nicely at Stratton House. This week we said goodbye to Boons Dad, who has now completed the making of 30 collection boxes. he also did extensive work around the grounds and we all say a big thankyou.

He did stay for the Tamboon ceremony that was held at Stratton House over the weekend. This is a special Buddhist ceremony where Monks are invited to the home where they perform special blessings in the presence of friends and neighbours.

On Saturday the head lay helper from Wat Mae Salab came with others to help us make the correct preperations.

string4White string was tied from the entrance gate all around the property, back to the gate and then back to the house.

A special blessing and offerings were made close to the properties water well.

Inside the house the living room was prepared with mats on the floor and items brought from the Temple, in readiness for the Monks arrival the next morning.

The word was sent out inviting all our near neighbours and other friends to.

park7The children we very well behaved and in the afternoon I took them to the playground in Mae Salab school as a thankyou.

The next morning there was more last minute running around making sure everthing was properly prepared.

This is an important cultural ceremony and I was at pains to make sure we did everything right and am very grateful for all the local understanding and support we received. Wasanaa worked very hard in the kitchen, with help from some local villagers, preparing the food.

There was a great turn out of local well wishers, as well as our landlord and also my good friend Ally and her partner Pee Took, who is a fellow Director of The Stratton ABC Foundation, with a couple of their close friends too.

At 9.30am myself and Somboon walked to Wat Mae salab to collect the four Monks and one Novice Monk , who would all perform the blessings for us.

Somewhat nervous about performing my own duties in the correct manner I was taken by the feeling of serenity that took hold as I walked beside the Monks to our home.

There was a slight delay as the Head Monk was held back for a short while to accept merit giving by some Temple visitors.

tamboon5Once he arrived proceedings began with me lighting candles and incense sticks on the prepared ‘altar’ and paying due respect to the teachings of The Lord Buddha, his followers and to The Buddha himself.

There was then a series of chanting performed by both the Monks and also the lay followers and all Thai visitors in the room. I would have loved to have joined in the lay peoples chants but was concerned that unpractised repetition, with possible wrong tonal inflection, may cause offence, so I sat in respectful silence. Although I cannot deny extreme discomfort whilst kneeling or sitting cross-legged, and being unable to prevent a degree of fidgeting, I did mangae some prolonged periods of stillness and once again experienced profound serenity as the Monks chanting took me into a meditative state.

tamboon8Indeed Somboon had to gently nudge me out of this state when it came to me to perform more duties, passing gifts into the hands of the Monks.

The Chants and blessings went on for approximately three quarters of an hour and throughout the blessings the Monks held the white string that now led into the house from outside. In this way, I understand, the blessings are applied to the whole of the property.

tamboon7The children present looked on with keen interest and Jack even came to sit beside me and joined in with the lay persons repetitions of the chanting.

It was then time for the personal blessings for all present where white string is tied around the wrist, before the feeding of the Monks, which had to be done before 11a.m.

Most of the visitors went to our kitchen/dining area outside.

tamboon15The Monks ate at low tables set out in the living room and before they left I was able to chat with them for a while. Thankfully the head Monk spoke good English and I thanked them for their blessings and talked of my love for Chiang Mai, its people and its culture. They in turn thanked me for the respect shown and wished The Foundation every success and welcomed us to the village.

Although the Monks left shortly after 11 , many people remained to enjoy the prepared food and drink and , like the Monks, they welcomed us warmly and wished us success, some placing their own personal Tamboon to us in our collection box.

tamboon17The day was not about money, but about acceptance within our local community and proper respect to the local culture which happens to be genuinely close to my heart.

I hope and believe that the day was a great success and certainly left me an ever growing confidence about the future of The Stratton ABC Foundation here in Mae Salab, Sarapee,Chiang Mai.

For more Tamboon photos please visit our photobucket album here.

suthep27Impressed by the childrens patience and behaviour throughout the ceremony, a tired crew made the effort to reward them with a trip to the popular waterfall picnic area a quarter of the way up Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai, later in the afternoon.
For more picnic photos please visit our photobucket album here.

Thanks again to all who attended.

Recently our team here at Stratton House was boosted by the arrival of Somboons Father, Boonma, who has been a great help during his stay.

Up early every morning he has been hard at work tidying up all the rough edges that remained around the grounds.

He has also started to utilise the remaining soil patches for vegetable growing.

pumpkinAround the borders of our site you can see many small wickered ‘fences’ like these which mark where he has planted pumpkin and marrows.

On top of all this he has been spending the remainder of his daytime hours constructing collection boxes. When he has finished this first batch we will have 30 collection boxes which we hope to place in and around the local community.

collection-boxes2The aim is that eventually the revenue from these boxes may cover the basic running costs of the home.

This will mean that more of your donations can be put towards further improvements to our facilities and services and towards our long term aim to actually purchase the property to ensure a permanent facility.

Behind the house the foundations of a previous building will be used for sporting activities such as badminton and basketball.

basketball-badmimtonWe hope to purchase a net this weekend and Boonma is possibly going to make us a basketball hoop very soon.
