The official Childrens Day is the second Saturday in January.

This year we had decided to stick to one of the smaller celebrations. We had been told that there would be activities at the Police Station in Chompoo.

So after the normal Saturday morning chores were finished we headed off at around 10.30am, taking the pleasant drive down the waterway to our Tumbol village.

Sure enough the activities were already underway with lots of games and giveaways to the children.

Mum kindly donated 100 baht to be given as a prize with one of the games, won by a local boy.

Our children got involved too, especially Nu who jumped at every chance to join in the fun.

Another well organised event by the local constabulary, who included a road sign identification game in the activities making for an educational morning as well as lots of fun.

There was not so much to do for the older of our children and after some thought and a couple of hours at Chompoo we decided to take everyone over to the Cold Season Festival at City Hall.

And what a good descision that was. One of the first things we did was get everyone a ticket for fishing out prize tickets from the waterway at the Red Cross stand. Most of us got washing liquid or shampoo, but Gu ended up winning us a twin tub washing machine.

After that great start we wandered around the festival where the children spent money that my Mother kindly gave and I paid for one big ride for everyone. The younger children all, opted for going on ‘bumper boats’ whilst Gu and Tai joined me on the Bumper cars.

Another great Day rounded off at home with another giveaway of cuddly toys from my Mum and relaxing infront of the TV with a Disney cartoon.

Hope you all had a great day kids…love you all.

Todays Gallery includes photos from the Pa-Ya-Nak Festival in Nongkhai, 2006, where Boon and myself witnessed 10 of the famed fireballs that shoot out from the river Mekon on October Full Moon. It is  phenomenon that has yet to be properly explained. The Buddhist belief is that it is Pa Ya Nak; the snake spirit that is supposed to have sheltered The Buddha from the rain, as he reached enlightenment; spitting its venom into the sky in order to join in clebrations honoring The Buddha.

And so we move into a New Year at Stratton House, now caring for 8 young Thai children.

On New Years Eve we took the children to the the annual Cold Season fair, held at City Hall, Chiang Mai. Very popular with the local population, it is a huge event, with many stalls, stages and fair ground rides. We arrived at around 6.30pm just after dark and the children were immediately excited to see the lights of the fair ground rides. There is so much to see at this festival that you could walk round for hours. Later in the evening there would be several different live acts performing on the various stages.

As is typical at such events there were hundreds of food, clothing, and toy stalls as well as many other displays fo things like mobile phone services, car showrooms, etc.

The fair ground rides were basic but very good value and our children spent time on a Merry-go-round, the Bouncy Castle, a Ghost House and the ‘Big’ Wheel.

The two older boys, Dtu and Tai tried their hands at Balloon bursting with darts and Dtu managed to win a cuddly bear.

We strolled around the various stalls and bought some colouring books for use back home and the children appeared to have a really good time.

The most popular event turned out to be a Snake show that we came across by chance.

Jack heard the announcer and pulled us to an area behind the stalls, where the show was just starting.

I’m not sure about the ethics of the show, involving a boy who looked to be about 12 baiting a viper of some sort to show its very painful looking fangs.

Several other snakes were featured including a Cobra which an older boy appeared to hypnotise inbetween out right baiting.

The older leader of the show, as well as talking all the way through, later performed some simple magic tricks which fascinated and amused the children no end.

By the time we got home at just after 10 the children were all too tired to wait for midnight so we had a quiet transition into 2010.
