Its been a full and productive week so far this week. Our Volunteer, Emilie, has shown great all round ability, helping not only with the children but also joining me in clearing the Foundations land whilst the children are at school.

After doing a couple of hours of that Monday morning, we went out on Re-cycle collection, first to our friend Blues’ house near Wat Suan Dawk, Chiang Mai and then calling in at the American Pacific International School Kindergarten in Hang Dong Road.

Whilst at APIS we got confirmation that the schools Main Campus wishes to join in our project and we will be contacting them this week to sort out collection details.

On the way home from there we also picked up a decent haul from Kwan Wiang Moo bahn.

Picking the Mattayom students up on the way we then returned home.

Emilie then switched to Volunteer carer mode and joined in fun and games with the children. As well as some karaoke going on Emilie did a great art exrecise with the children producing “sand pictures”

In the evening there was a Buddhist celebration going on at Wat Mae Salaab and we took all the children along for an hour after dinner.

We first watched the parade headed by a “Prince” on pony, before taking the children to the fair that was set up, where the younger ones spent time on the Bouncy Castle and the older ones had goes on Balloon popping and shooting games.

Then it was back home to get that all important homework done before bed.

We seem to be getting a good run with Volunteers as we have now been joined by Emilie Gumy, a lovely lady who has been teaching in Korea and was directed to us by a previous volunteer Eunjey.

Arriving yesterday we picked her up from Sarapee on the way home from collecting our four Mattayom level students who have been away on a 3 day Scout camp with their school.

That was lunch time and it didn’t take long for Emily to pitch in, helping the girls with the post-lunch clear up.

And she appeared to be an instant hit with the kids after that joining them in their Saturday afternoon free time and instigating some fun and games herself.

She also helped the May 2 and Jor with their new “spring” mattresses purchased yesterday.

We bought 3 with one going to Tai. We will be replacing more in the near future but are still looking for a kind hearted sponsor to cover the costs.

Emilie will be with us until next Saturday so I’m sure there will be much more fun in-store.

Yet more thanks to Pui for helping to put us in touch with our new friend and supporter Jurgen,

Today we had a very welcome visit from Pui, her family and Jurgen and his friend Ohs. Jurgen has expressed an interest in helping our Foundation, liking our core philosophies and our work so far.

Our visitors came with yet another great lunch for the kids, with green curry, chicken, noodles and much more. Jurgen and Ohs also presented us with a huge supply of toothpaste and toothbrushes for the children, donated by a dentist friend of theirs in Switzerland. Sorry I failed to get your name, but we all say a big thanks for that.

After a fantastic lunch Jurgen offered a return visit to Childrens World at the Night Safari. And so there followed a wonderful afternoon for the kids and a relaxing time for the adults with chance to discuss several ideas in connection with onward funding and development.

This includes a kind offer to help design and produce drawings for our ” permanent facility”.

We would like to thank Jurgen, Ohs, Pui and all her family for their generous support and I look forward to ongoing discussions in the near future.

On Thursday I received a phone call from acquaintances of our friend Pui, saying that they would like to come and donate food for the children this weekend.

We made the arrangement for Saturday lunchtime with me happy that yet more people are stepping forward to help but with no clue as to who these new people were.

At 11.30am Saturday morning I got a very nice surprise as we were treated to a visit from Bpaa Ohm and her generous group of friends.

Prior to starting the Foundation, I had run a business in the centre of Chiang Mai for 2 years and for the majority of that time Bpaa Ohm was my next door neighbour, with her own business. We got on famously then and I have often wondered how she was and remember those times fondly.

She was equally surprised, having no idea that I was running this Foundation. Our old landlords secretary, who worked above Bpaa Ohms shop was also in the group.

So it was a particularly happy welcome to this lovely group of Thai citizens, plus one “Farang” , Ian, who came and donated not only a fantastic lunch of Hang Lay and other traditional Thai food, but also bedsheets, kanom, kitchen supplies, such as cooking oil and sauces , and a generous cash donation of 4000 baht.

We would like to thank them all very much and hope it won’t be too long before we see them again.

This weekends work sessions saw a concerted effort by the kids.

Being that this project involves the very young children to I have been doing some work to it myself to help them along.

So far the first pen is finished barring a little more concrete to hold the front fence in place, and our oldest dog, Wispa , has already moved in.

We hope to have the second pen finished next weekend and start on two more for the remaining dogs.

Well done that team, and a mention for Gu who helped the younger ones this weekend and also did some work towards the project on Friday when his class had a free day.

Well I have to say I’m allowing myself a modicum of pride seeing our total hits since August 2010 break the 10,000 mark.

Its nice to know that so many have looked in.

What we really need is, for those of you who look in and agree that we are doing a good thing here, to hit that donate button and help ensure that we can continue, develop and hopefully build our permanent facility.

You can also donate by direct bank transfer if you prefer.

We are seeing great things from the children here that suggest promising futures for the few who reside here. We would very much like to increase our work to help many more disadvantaged children here in Northern Thailand.

As you can see by our recently added monthly target meter we are presently running on a little over half the donations we need simply to break even. Up until now the shortfall each month has been made up by the Foundations Director. This is not an infinitely feasible situation.

So please, if you are looking in, and like what we are doing please consider giving whatever you can spare, every little helps.

To all those who have volunteered here in the past and support our work please consider our Gamma Teams iniative.

Thanks for visiting.

I am so proud of our children for all their hard work and effort with the Villa and Sport Project. The last few sessions have been spent creating flower beds around the outdoor concrete chess table.

There has been some great thought put into it and I can honestly report that the ideas are all the children’s creations.

This area is particularly May 2′s idea but once again Tai has been adding that extra touch adding wooden posts and bamboo strip fencing around the front flower beds.

I also love the curved flower beds behind the chess table which I’m sure will be beautiful once the planted flowers come through.

Keep this up kids and you could start your own Landscaping company when you get older. The leading four man team have now got into holdiing proper planning meetings in the evenings before project days; organising what work will be done and by who.

The Project budget of 5 thousand baht has been donated by Helen Williams, a good friend and Mother of one of the Autistic children I used to care for in the UK.

Brendan, our latest volunteer has shown great willingness to help out with the physical jobs here at Stratton House and not just the play time.

He has been helping me construct our new compost pits and this morning went at the old pile in the concrete pipe sections, with a shovel and transferred the compost to its new site.

During this effort he came across many wondrous creatures, maybe not as beautiful and exotic as the sights he saw whilst diving in Koh Tao, interesting tho , eh Brendan?

The children are continuing to work well on the grounds improvement project. Last week they did more work on the vegetable plots but then moved onto work on some flower beds. The change came after I noticed a little boredom setting in with the vegetable plots taking so long. Allowing for the fact that they are all still learning and that we have not put a time limit on the project, I thought it better that they take a break from the veg plots to help maintain their enthusiasm.

On Friday , whilst out on our re- cycle collection run we popped into one of the plant shops near Hang Dong Road and the children chose a variety of flowers and plants to add to the garden ambiance.

This is a short report made on our Re-Cycle Project. We hope that as many of you as possible, that live locally in and around Chiang Mai City: especially Hang Dong , Sarapee side; may wish to take advantage of the service offered , knowing that in return you are helping our work continue.

We also welcome voluntary support in organising collection points and increasing participants.

The Stratton ABC Foundation Re-Cycle Project

Introduction:

As a small Foundation Fund Raising can be difficult and it is important that we look at all possible means of securing regular income of funds to continue the Foundations work.

With Foundation philosophy keen to work within an environmentally friendly framework we already re-cycle as much of our own waste as possible.

This includes plastic, paper, glass, metal and the use of vegetable waste in composting for our vegetable garden.

With economics being difficult for everyone at present we wanted to find a way for people to support the Foundations ongoing operations without necessarily needing to part with money.

Our intention is to offer a re-cyclables collection service enabling people to “donate” their rubbish. These re-cylables would then be taken to our local recycle outlet and be exchanged for cash to be put towards Foundation funds.

Set-Up

The initial set-up costs for this project should be minimal and mostly consist of transport and “expenses” for meeting with interested parties to set up the collections.

All costs will be recorded to ensure proper evaluation of this scheme.

Action Taken So Far

This idea was first posted on the Foundation website and on Facebook some months ago but we received no response.

Recently however, our idea was featured in the local magazine, City Life, since which we have had inquiries from people very interested in helping out.

A prominent International School has expressed a wish to be involved with one of the teachers wanting to establish a recycling project with the children and would likely mean a weekly collection.

20th September I have a meeting with Faye Mitchel, Editor of Living Journals Hawaii, to discuss establishing re-cycle bins at her apartment block where residents could donate their rubbish and would also likely involve a weekly collection.

21st September we expect a first delivery of re-cyclables by an Englishman resident in Sam Kampeang, this is likely to be a monthly event.

Organisational Needs

To ensure that this project meets its expectations it is important that we establish “collection runs” which mean that we are collecting full loads on the pick-up truck making fuel costs minimal.

Stickers with both English and Thai language need to be produced to ensure people understand the donation system and needs and discourage “donation” of dangerous or toxic materials.

Where possible volunteers should be used to organize collection points and increase participant numbers.

Aims

Considering the initial lack of response to the project we should not get over ambitious at this point.

Our initial aim is that income from this project may reach a point where it covers our  weekly Food Budget.(4 to 5000 baht)

However, realizing the increasing awareness of the need for such action as re-cycling and the relatively minimal organized schemes in Chiang Mai we believe that , with the support of friends and volunteers , it may well be possible to increase participation to the point where we may get close to covering The Foundations basic running costs.(40 to 50,000 baht per month)
