Thursday this week was a very full day. The morning started with some work in the garden after breakfast. With Brendans help we first dug out an extra sink pit for excess rain water, which when finished became the short entrance to the garden table area.

That done we then cleared the pile of rubble that has sat for far too long in the yard. Shoveling it all onto the truck we then took it up to our land.

Not surprisingly, after all the recent rain, the way down to our land was, once again, overgrown. So whilst Brendan and the boys shoveled rubble into our cart, I went ahead with the strimmer to clear a path down.

We hope to get down to start preparing our land for growing vegetables next week.

Once that job was completed it was back to the house to get ready for lunch before the next activity.

To be honest I’m still undecided as to whether all this physical work is rejuvenating me or ageing me. I’ll stick with the thought that its doing me the world of good, and far cheaper than going to the gym.

Stuck to just one load of rubble today as I needed to strim down the track to clear the long grass and see where we need to fill most.

truth is there is little point doing a full “road” down to the land right now. We can not start building until we have been successful in securing sufficient donations, which may take some time. And with other house building planned in the adjacent lands the local authority will be making an official road next year.

The main thing is to lay a dry walkway so we can get down and start using the land for vegetable growing and possibly keeping chickens.

I have just about finished laying a hard area where we can park the truck without getting stuck in the mud.

Tomorrow will be a major effort to complete filling the walkway where the ground is at its soggiest.

So our vegetable growing project is well underway now. The children have been out watering their plots every morning and checking progress.

Its a learning curve for all of us as we see what will grow easily.

Most of the pots have yeilded results of varying degree, with just two yet to show signs of life.

The most vigorous growth so far has come from Gu’s pot, in which he is producing ‘yard long beans’.

We would love to extend this project, not just to give more growing area to our own children but also with the thought to invite children from the local community to join in if they want to. Please follow the link if you think you would like to help.

Recently our team here at Stratton House was boosted by the arrival of Somboons Father, Boonma, who has been a great help during his stay.

Up early every morning he has been hard at work tidying up all the rough edges that remained around the grounds.

He has also started to utilise the remaining soil patches for vegetable growing.

pumpkinAround the borders of our site you can see many small wickered ‘fences’ like these which mark where he has planted pumpkin and marrows.

On top of all this he has been spending the remainder of his daytime hours constructing collection boxes. When he has finished this first batch we will have 30 collection boxes which we hope to place in and around the local community.

collection-boxes2The aim is that eventually the revenue from these boxes may cover the basic running costs of the home.

This will mean that more of your donations can be put towards further improvements to our facilities and services and towards our long term aim to actually purchase the property to ensure a permanent facility.

Behind the house the foundations of a previous building will be used for sporting activities such as badminton and basketball.

basketball-badmimtonWe hope to purchase a net this weekend and Boonma is possibly going to make us a basketball hoop very soon.
